Racing
NASA Florida Racing Program

Regional sprint race series offered as a fun, friendly environment with an emphasis on good sportsmanship and clean competitive driving.  Licensed NASA racers are invited to join the fun and compete in NASA FL's regional points program for trophies and year end awards.

It's easy for racers who are currently licensed through another recognized sanctioning body to obtain a NASA competition license and start racing with NASA. Rookie racers who have completed a NASA competition school or a racing school from another recognized sanctioning body are welcome to apply for a provisional race license issued through NASA FL. NASA FL holds at least one 2-day competition licensing school per year.

RACER INFO:
Racer must be a member of National Auto Sport Association (NASA).
Regional races are sanctioned by NASA and rules of the racing program are in accordance with those in the current NASA Club Codes and Regulations (CCR) rule book.
Cars are subject to CCR, specifically for required safety equipment, vehicle legality and general competition vehicle rules in CCR Competition sections 15-18.

AMB transponder is required for timing purposes. Driver is responsible for purchasing and installing their transponder and verifying that their transponder is operating properly during timed sessions. NASA FL maintains a small supply of transponders for purchase. Order online via the event registration page or contact Registrar for availability. Allow minimum of 14 dates for delivery.

LICENSING:
In order to compete with NASA FL, drivers must hold a current NASA race license. Experienced racers may use a current road racing license issued from another approved sanctioning body such as SCCA, IMSA, Grand Am, FIA or HSR to apply for their NASA Competition License. An up-to-date medical/physical must be on file with NASA, however a medical/physical from another sanctioning body is acceptable as long as it is signed and dated by a physician according to the NASA guidelines appropriate for the racers age group. NASA race licenses are issued per calendar year and are valid from January through December each year. Licensing fees are payable to NASA National and check should be made payable to NASA. First time license applicants should allow minimum of 2 weeks processing time and all licensing issues must be in place before arriving at the event.

The two types of NASA competition licenses available are explained below.

1) NASA Provisional Race License:
Issued on regional level to those who have completed an approved NASA race competition school or those who have graduated from a professional road race school program, but have limited road racing experience. Also issued to experienced racers who do not process a current license issued through another recognized sanctioning body. Experienced racers who hold a current competition license from PBOC (only) or any other road racing organization not recognized by NASA headquarters should apply for a Provisional race license. NASA Provisional license is recognized only within the NASA region it is issued or at the discretion of the out- of- Region Director. Provisional license can be upgraded to NASA competition race license after four races without incident and obtaining the proper signoffs from the Race Director after each race. There is no charge to upgrade to a NASA competition license as long as the upgrade is made within the same calendar year.

Submit Provisional License Application, requested copies, medical /physical and check made payable to "NASA" for annual licensing fee to: Barbara Nix, 4922 SW 20th Place, Cape Coral, FL 33914.

2) NASA Competition License:
Issued on a national level from NASA headquarters and is recognized nation wide in all NASA regions. Drivers who hold a current "national" race license from any approved sanctioning body are issued this type of license. Send copy of racing license, NASA competition license application, NASA medical/physical form, and annual licensing fee to: NASA, PO Box 21555, Richmond, CA 94820-1555 or FAX all materials with credit card for payment to 510-412-0549 Attn: Dave Ho

RACE CAR RULES & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Each race car must meet minimum requirements for safety equipment and gear according to the competition section of the current NASA Club Codes and Regulations. Annual tech inspection and NASA vehicle logbooks are required. Annual tech inspections are due each calendar year and should be completed at an approved NASA FL Tech Station. Appointment required. Questions regarding annual tech contact Chris Burson cburson95@aol.com. null

RACE DAY FORMAT:
Most NASA FL region events are "double" weekend racing events offering race groups the following on each day of the event (Sat & Sun): 1 timed practice session, 1 qualifying session and 1 sprint race followed by a podium ceremony with awards presentation. Printed timing sheets are available after each timed session.

RACE CAR CLASSING OPTIONS:

NASA FL regional sprint race series is open to all closed wheel NASA race classes as noted in the rules section at http://www.nasaproracing.com Performance Touring and Super Unlimited can be used to serve as a "catch all" series for those who are having difficulty finding a specific NASA race series for their car. If you don't see your NASA race class offered on the online registration page, please contact the registrar's office and it can be added easily.

NASA FL REGIONAL POINTS:
All points races are sprint races. Points will be awarded each day for all race starters as explained below.

Place in Class  Points
 1st  100
 2nd  90
 3rd  85
 4th  80
 5th  75
 6th  70
 7th  69
 8th  68
and then 1 point less for each position beyond 8th.

Any Driver completing a minimum of half of the laps covered by the winning car in their class is considered a finisher.

All starters that are not considered a finisher will be given half of the last place finisher's points in their class (Partial points to be rounded off to next highest number) .

Racers must enter a minimum of half of each year's races in their respective class to be eligible for year end rewards in that class. Year end points total will be computed by adding the points from each racer's highest points from 3/4 of the total number of races held during the racing season.  If 3/4 of the number of races results in a total of races other than a whole number, the overage will be dropped.

CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS:
NASA Florida Region Racing program is intended to be a fun, safe and competitive race venue where driver skill is the most important ingredient for being successful. Good sportsmanship will be valued more than "where" a driver finishes in the race. Clean, well executed passing is required. Punting or leaning into a competitor's car for race position advantage is unacceptable. Metal to metal contact, including bump drafting will result in investigation and possible sanctions. Race stewards have the responsibility and authority to monitor over-aggressive driving in practice, qualifying and race sessions and to remove offending driver from the track if said driver is viewed as a threat to the safety of other drivers. Good sportsmanship both on and off the track is required.

NASA FLORIDA 13/13 RULE:
While the format for administering a 13/13 rule is described below, the focus is not on the literal interpretations of the rule, but rather the spirit. NASA Florida will employ a "Modified 13/13 Rule", meaning any driver involved in car-to-car contact will likely be placed on probation from anywhere between 4 races to 13 months. Should the driver be involved in another incident resulting in car-to-car contact during the probation, he or she will be suspended for 13 months and forfeit any points accumulated. Automobile racing is a dangerous sport and accidents will occur, however the intent of our Modified 13/13 Rule is to set the tone for sportsmanship and camaraderie within our racing program and to help minimize the danger and expense involved in club racing.
